Conclusion of Geological Field Trips: Exploring the Cretaceous–Paleogene Boundary in Duhok Region
Thursday, October 15, 2026 ,On the final day, field trips were conducted to the areas of Badi and Sandoor to visit the boundary of both the Cretaceous and Paleogene geological ages. This boundary is related to the fifth and final mass extinction event of living organisms in Earth's history, which is known as: Cretaceous – Paleogene Boundary (End Cretaceous Mass Extinction) Additionally, the upper part of the Kolosh Formation and the invertebrate fossils contained within it were examined. The abundance and good preservation of the fossils caught the attention of the delegation. Both trips were conducted under the supervision of Dr. Abdulrahman Bamarni, alongside Dr. Zahid Omar Mustafa, Dr. Baban Mustafa Yousif, Mr. Ameer Haider Khalid, and Mr. Zeyad Danial Zaya. Identifying the boundary of the Cretaceous – Paleogene ages and the Danian age in the Duhok region holds special scientific importance. It is of great significance for understanding the geological history of the region and its connections to global events.
