Description
The autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) encompass a number of conditions, the most classical of which include Graves’ disease (GD) and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). AITD share a commonality in their underlying cellular and a humoral immune responses that are targeted at the thyroid gland, resulting in infiltration of the thyroid by T and B lymphocytes reactive to thyroid antigens and the production of thyroid autoantibodies, leading to the clinical manifestations of hyperthyroidism in GD and hypothyroidism in HT.
